Monday Night Football: Jets stun Bills with punt return TD in OT
The New York Jets stunned the Buffalo Bills 22-16 in overtime on Monday Night Football, thanks to a 65-yard punt return touchdown by rookie Xavier Gipson.
The game was a wild one from start to finish. The Jets lost starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers to an Achilles injury just four plays into the game, and the Bills took advantage, building a 13-3 halftime lead.
But the Jets rallied in the second half. They forced four turnovers from Bills quarterback Josh Allen, including three interceptions by Jordan Whitehead. And they got a big play from Gipson, who returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 16 with 58 seconds left in regulation.
The Bills had a chance to win the game in regulation, but they were stopped on fourth down at the Jets' 11-yard line. And in overtime, the Jets forced the Bills to punt again. This time, Gipson took it to the house for the win.
It was a stunning victory for the Jets, who were heavily favored by the Bills. But the Jets showed a lot of heart and determination, and they will be a team to watch in the AFC East this season.
Gipson the hero
Gipson was the unsung hero of the game. He was an undrafted rookie out of Stephen F. Austin, and he was playing in his first NFL game. But he made the biggest play of the game, and he helped the Jets pull off a huge upset.
Gipson's punt return touchdown was the first by a rookie in overtime since Patrick Peterson did it for the Arizona Cardinals in 2011. And it was the first punt return touchdown by any player in overtime against the Bills since Tamarick Vanover did it for the Kansas City Chiefs in 1995.
Rodgers injury a big blow
The loss of Rodgers was a big blow to the Jets. He was their starting quarterback and one of the best players in the NFL. But the Jets showed that they can still compete without him.
Zach Wilson played well in relief of Rodgers. He threw for 210 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran for 39 yards. And the Jets defense played a great game, forcing four turnovers.
The Jets are a dangerous team
The Jets are a dangerous team. They have a lot of young talent, and they showed on Monday Night Football that they can compete with the best teams in the NFL.
The Jets will be a team to watch in the AFC East this season. They have the potential to make a lot of noise.
